TN Handgun Preregistration
This course deals with the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe and proper use of a handgun, and provides information on the citizen’s right of self-defense. The course is taught using guidelines provided by the Tennessee Department of Safety and will meet the requirement for applying for a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. Classes are offered to men and women age 21 or older or within 6 months of being 21.
Instructors are NRA Certified
The class is 8 hours long and requires qualifying with a handgun at the firing range. If you do not feel comfortable with your handgun, please sign up for the Basic class first to learn gun safety, range safety and shooting techniques. Range qualification requires shooting a total of 50 rounds from 3 yards, 5 yards and 7 yards. After the 4 hour classroom portion there is a 30 question test. Upon successful completion of the class you will be given a certificate which you will need to take to the DMV and pay for a background check, fingerprints and having your photo taken.
A fully operational, quality handgun (one may be rented at IronHorse, if needed)

· 50 rounds of ammunition (“factory new” recommended and may be purchased at IronHorse)

2 Complete Your Application for the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Before Class. You must apply on-line before class because your instructor needs your Application Confirmation Number to notify the State that you passed. Use the links below to go to the Department of Safety's Online System. It's simple and straight forward. Plus, the system allows you to check-up on the status of your application. If you fail to bring your Appication Confirmation Number to class you will be unable to complete the course.
3 What Happens At The Driver's License Station? Once you have received a passing score in the Handgun Safety Course (Handgun Permit Class) you will need to go to a full service Driver License station of your choice. There you will be asked to: ?
◦ Present proof that you are a US citizen or lawful permanent resident
◦ Pay the Handgun Carry Permit Application Fee
◦ Have your photo taken and your signature digitally captured
4 At the Driver License Center you will be told how and where to have your finger prints taken.
5 Check on your Handgun Carry Permit application status on-line, any time. Use the Department of Safety's Online Handgun Processing System to check in on your Handgun Carry Permit application. Use your Driver's License number and Application Confirmation Number to access the Applicant Dashboard. It's easy and fast.
